WHAT IS PENTECOST?
Pentecost is not a denomination, but an experience. Our critics brand us as religious fanatics and deplore our form of worship as being too noisy. What they seem to be utterly blinded to is that a genuine Pentecostal baptism of the Holy Ghost evidenced by speaking with other tongues is an intoxicating experience.
When the hundred and twenty received the baptism of the Holy Ghost on the day of Pentecost, recorded in the second chapter of the book of Acts, many who came to witness this marvelous phenomenon believed. But as could be expected, there were scoffers in the crowded who disdainfully rejected the whole thing saying, "These men are full of new wine."
I'm sure there are no questions as to the actions of a drunken man, but the apostle Peter standing up with the eleven (note that all twelve apostles were in full agreement) denied the charge. He stated emphatically, "For these are not drunken as you suppose.. but this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; and it shall come to pass in the last days saith God, I will pour out of my spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy.." Acts 2:15-17.
Why should religion be associated with tombs and cemeteries and musty dead ritualism? True spiritual worship is a joyous, happy, lively occasion.
When they received the Holy Ghost, the following all spoke with other tongues: the Apostles & the mother of Jesus (Acts 1:13-14, 2:1-4), The Samaritans (Acts 8:14-20), Cornelius and his house (Acts10:44-48), the men at Ephesus (Acts19:1-7), and the apostle Paul (Acts 9:17-19, I Cor 14:18, 39) These are our examples, recorded in God's word for us to follow.
Why did God choose speaking with other tongues as the physical evidence of receiving the Holy Ghost?
1. God is sovereign, He may choose as He will without consulting anyone.
2. Tongues are an external evidence of something that has taken place in the heart.
3. Speaking with tongues is the uniform sign that one has received this gift of the Spirit.
4. The tongue is the most unruly member of the body. It is a recorder of the extent one has yielded to God.
"For with stammering lips and another tongue will He speak to this people." --Isaiah 28:11
